KOTA KINABALU: Sabah has recorded RM2.1 billion in tourism receipts the first three months this year.
Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment permanent secretary Datu Rosmadi Datu Sulai said the revenue showed an increase of 9.5 per cent compared to the same period last year.
“International tourist arrivals also registered an increase of 20.4 per cent with 365, 212 visiting the state between January and March this year.
“Chinese and Korean tourists top the foreign arrival statistics,” he said during the launch of the Hospitality and Tourism Training centre at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) here.
Domestic tourist arrivals stood at 582,409, a decrease of 1. 9 per cent.
Rosmadi added that while the tourism industry in Sabah is booming, accomodation remained a concern.
The 630 hotels and 376 homestays in the state were insufficient to meet the growing demand for lodging, he said.
“In Sabah, we are blessed with nature and the ministry has been focusing on eco and rural tourism.
“The establishment of the training centre for hospitality students are timely to cater the workforce in the tourism industry,” he said.
Rosmadi said the ministry would collaborate with UiTM to maximise potential for students and the industry.
Present was UiTM Hotel Management and Tourism faculty lecturer Dr Spencer Headley Mogindol.
